DEBATE COMPETITION
“THE BATTLE BEYOND OPINIONS”
On November 7th, 2024, the University School of Commerce and Management hosted an engaging academic activity titled “Debate Competition - The Battle Beyond Opinions.” The event aimed to foster critical thinking, enhance public speaking skills, and promote intellectual discourse on contemporary issues. Participants from various academic backgrounds competed in teams, presenting well-structured arguments supported by facts, logical analysis, and real-world examples. The debates revolved around three thought-provoking topics: “Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Humans?” “Which is More Important: Hard work or Smart work?” and “Is Social Media Addictive or Informative?”
The team supporting AI’s ability to replace humans highlighted AI’s role in transforming sectors like education, industry, and healthcare by enhancing efficiency and automating repetitive tasks. The opposition emphasized irreplaceable human qualities such as creativity, emotional intelligence, and ethical decision-making, along with ethical concerns like algorithmic bias. Proponents of hard work argued that sustained effort is the cornerstone of success and resilience, while the opposing side championed smart work, emphasizing optimization, technology use, and efficiency in today’s fast-paced world. A team argued that social media is addictive, noting its designs to engage users continuously and the resulting mental health issues, whereas the opposing team advocated for its informative potential when used responsibly, highlighting platforms that raise awareness and facilitate meaningful connections.
Winners included Team B.Com 1st (Regular) members Ms Tanveer Kaur and Ms Kirandeep Kaur, who secured the 1st position. The 2nd position was shared by Team BBA 3rd, represented by Ms Bhawna and Mr Pavitardeep Singh, and Team B.Com 1st (Regular) with Ms Palak Choudhry and Ms Prabhjot Kaur. Team BCA 1st (Specialization) members Mr Gourav Kumar and Ms Sarabpreet Kaur claimed the 3rd position.
